Building upon heritage in Central Pennsylvania, Smith Company has studied colonial practices and is recreating an operational Grist Mill in the historical Renfrew Park.
The Renfrew Grist Mill project was conceived in 2017 when a local historian and philanthropist brought the idea to the non-profits board members. The concept of a new mill at Renfrew Museum and Park was well received and the project moved forward slowly with much deliberation. As a board member Don Smith, RA of Smith Company Design and Architecture provided much guidance and technical support for the next two years before finally developing construction drawings and bidding the project out to local contractors. The final design was an elegant blend of modern building techniques and historical materials. The 5,000 square foot mill has two floors and an attic. The structure is true timber framing utilizing white oak timbers. The framing is all clad with SIPS panels providing the necessary insulation needed. The SIPS panels are clad with stone and brick on the exterior and reclaimed barnwood planks on the interior. Windows are true divided lite wood double hung windows in a 6 over 6 style. The doors are custom made from white oak with true Dutch doors constructed for the mill’s exterior. The roofing is replica cedar shake shingles comprised of heavy-duty composite material that will be maintenance free for generations to come. Copper gutters and downspouts provide a beautiful accent to set off the exterior of this 100 year old building.
